I’ve thought about this for a while. Honestly? I can’t say there is a better period in the history of Graphic design. They all seem interconnected and inevitable. There are eras that stand out to me though as more prolific. Art Nouveau, for instance. -With its luxurious style, continues to thrive today. Touching everything from architecture and graphic design to fine arts and typography.

And of course, Art deco, once again replacing Art Nouveau in design history. Lives on in everything from home décor, furniture design, painting, sculpture, and body art.

Tatty Martin, a writer from Rise Art, makes an interesting observation.“After all, in some ways, 2020 feels a lot like 1920. A century ago, the anti-immigration sentiment was high, white nationalism was on the rise and rapid technological advancement changed the world drastically in the span of a generation. Then, art deco design emerged as a hopeful balm for global uncertainty. Design trends tend to be cyclical, and interior designers and tastemakers have been predicting the style’s resurgence for the past couple of years.” https://www.riseart.com/guide/2379/art-deco-vs-art-nouveau

Indeed, design trends ebb and flow. However, 2021 not only enhances these trends. It’s able to champion old and new trends. Artists in every genre now have the tools to make impactful social change. Utilizing social media platforms, creative apps, large high definition monitors, Wacom tablets,  styluses, and more. The creative opportunities are pretty much limitless.

Designers also have the privilege and freedom of education. Particularly, Americans and Europeans who have access to information. Right at the tip of their fingers. Literally... Now you can see design lectures on YouTube from hundreds of designers. Old and new, around the world. Right now, in the comfort of your own space. You can check in with your mentors on Instagram. What's Scher up to? What has Harrington designed today?

Short on time? Listen to Mike Monteiro, co-founder of Mule Design, or the revealing stories of graphic designer Paul Shares, in his book Two-Dimensional Man. All on audiobook for your listening pleasure.

I believe there's also a more monumental humanistic view that we have not seen in previous eras. Artists and designers are collaborating more. Fine artists are working with graphic designers to create modern hybrids of art. Multicultural and political issues are addressed with stunning and proactive beauty.

                                        .

The History of Graphic design course has reminded me of the importance of creativity and the power it can wield. Designers and artists by their very nature, are record keepers of a sort. They bear witness to the beautiful and ugly parts of us all.

Our cave-dwelling ancestors understood the importance and reverence of our intrinsic, creative, "barbaric yawp (my man Whitman )." I believe 2021 will meet all our creative demands and more. Who knows? Maybe will experience another artistic renaissance. I’m hopeful all us creatives will find their our own “yawps” and be fully, the creative stewards we are meant to be.
