  • Born April 2, 1902, Leipzig, Germany.
  • Died August 11, 1974, at the age of seventy-two. Locarno, Switzerland



Why is Jan important?
  • "Revolutionized the craftsmanship of the letterform with asymmetrical brilliance breaking new ground in type design."
  •  Played a huge role in the creation of modern typography.
  • Artsin background and calligraphic training set him apart from other typographers and influenced his design style/skill set.

  • Said to be a remarkable teacher.
  • "Wrote  Die neue Typographie and Typographische Gestaltung which became standard textbooks for the next generation of typographers."
  • "Redesigned Penguin Books paperbacks, supervised the redesign of 500 books."

What I like about Jan and his designs.
  • Use of white space.
  • Color choices. Red, Black. Classic. Powerful message.
  • Beautiful use of Grid.
  • Love the typface Sabon.
  • Beauty in simplicity. 
  • Practical but dynamic and engaging.
  • Stood up to Nazi bullshit. Authentically himself.
  • Able to recognize his own ego and willing to change/explore his design philosophies.
My errors were more fertile than I ever imagined… In the light of my present knowledge, it was a juvenile opinion to consider the sans serif has the most suitable or even the most contemporary typeface.”
